Outline: This course provides a foundation in the investigation of computer-based crimes, focusing specifically on the investigation of Microsoft Windows computer systems and use of the EnCASE software package as the main route of examination. Edinburgh Napier University is an EnCase centre of excellence and a trusted partner with Police Scotland.
Napier University School of Computing lecturers will instruct the Fundamentals of Digital Forensics including examination of file systems, the analysis of internet activity and examination of other computer based artefacts. Participants will be introduced to a number of fundamental forensic techniques, such as using hash sets for data analysis, recovering deleted files and folders and the carving of files.
Course coverage
The course will run for 5 consecutive days including pre-course material. The programme will involve a number of modules including the introduction to technology, ethics and crime scene, file systems and forensic techniques, the basics of Windows Operating Systems analytics and online analysis.
