Professor Madjid Merabti is Director of the School of Computing & Mathematical Sciences, a Professor of Networked Systems at Liverpool John Moores University, and director of the PROTECT Research Centre.
He is a graduate of Lancaster University, UK. He has over 20 years’ experience in conducting research and teaching in Distributed Multimedia Systems (Networks, Operating Systems, Computer Security).
Madjid has over 160 publications in these areas and he leads the Distributed Multimedia Systems Group which has a number of government and industry supported research projects in the areas of: Multimedia Networking, Human Digital Life Memories Systems, Games Technology, Mobile and Wireless Networks, Networked Appliances, Sensor Networks, Intrusion Detection, Computer Forensic, and Network Security Architectures.
Professor Merabti is involved with a number of industry collaborative projects in the areas of networking and security, with companies including Selex (Finmeccanica), Thales, SINTEF and many SMEs.
Professor Merabti has been supervising postgraduate research students for over 20 years, having successfully graduated over 26 PhD students in the areas of networking, security and critical infrastructures. Professor Merabti advises on higher education reform and developments in the UK and overseas.
He has been elected as an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer 2011–2013 in networking and security, presenting a series of lectures in the UK, Brazil and the Middle East. He was invited to assist with the IEEE’s worldwide Public Visibility efforts in security and mobile devices.
Professor Merabti actively participates in the research community in the UK and abroad, including being an EPSRC Peer Review College member, an EPSRC Funding Panel Member for UK Communications Research, and an international reviewer for a number of research councils in countries such as France, the Netherlands, Qatar State, Switzerland and Canada. He was awarded a Peru-Honorary Professorship in 2005.
As both a businessman and as an academic, Professor Williams is a leading figure in the international cyber security community with twenty years of experience in enterprise IT, Information Assurance and cyber security. As a director of SBL, he develops and leads the business development strategy of a wholly UK owned and controlled market leading provider of vendor independent cyber security solutions to central government, blue light services and the wider public sector.
Professor Williams was a member of the founding cohort of CLAS consultants. He has been involved in initiating and delivering some of the largest software volume licence public sector procurement projects in the world.
As an academic, he is developing a body of work around the human, intellectual, cultural, societal and historical context of computing which he is delivering across a series of lectures, seminars and papers.
Professor Williams consults and speaks on cyber, cyber security and strategic enterprise IT procurement in the UK and internationally. He is editor in chief of “CyberTalk” and new journal for the promotion and development of fresh and interdisciplinary thinking about cyber and the human relationships with computers.
Rosheen works as Programme Officer for the Europe Office where she coordinates projects, events and other developmental actions including Cybersecurity related ones.
She has experience in managing IT Security initiatives in the field of sensitization, audits, implementation of information security management systems (ISMS) based on ISO 27001/2 standards and in international cooperation to operationalize the national CIRTs and the national PKI. She has also been involved in the elaboration of national ICT strategies. She has over 12 years of experience in the field of IT Security and IT Project Management.
Rosheen received her first degree in Computer Science with honours in Information Systems, in 1994 and her MBA in 1996, both from Murdoch University, Perth, Australia
Bill Buchanan is a Professor in the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University, and a Fellow of the BCS and the IET. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2017 Birthday Honours for services to cyber security. Currently he leads the Centre for Distributed Computing, Networks, and Security and The Cyber Academy. His main research focus is around information sharing, such as using Trust and Governance Policies, threat analysis, cryptography, and triage within digital forensics. This has led to several World-wide patents, and in three highly successful spin-out companies: Zonefox (zonefox.com); Symphonic Software (www.symphonicsoft.com/); and Cyan Forensics (cyanforensics.com).
Bill regularly appears on TV and radio related to computer security, and has given evidence to the Justice Committee at the Scottish Parliament, along with being part of the BBC Scottish Independence Team of Experts (speciality: Cyber Security). This includes appearances on Newsnight Scotland, Good Morning Scotland, Panorama, and Radio 5 Newsdrive. Bill was named as one of the Top 100 people for Technology in Scotland for 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. In Feb 2016, he was also included in the FutureScot "Top 50 Scottish Tech People Who Are Changing The World".
Recently his work on Secret Shares received “Innovation of the Year” at the Scottish Knowledge Exchange Awards, for a research project which involves splitting data into secret shares, and can then be distributed across a public Cloud-based infrastructure. He was included in the JISC Top 50 Higher Education Social Media Influencers in 2015.
Adrian will be the Co-Ordinator of the Lindsay Theatre part of the conference, and is responsible for Canadian connection: the part of the conference where we shall be streaming presentations from the Canadian Institute of Cybersecurity (CIC).

Dr. Arash Habibi Lashkari is an assistant professor of Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC) at the Faculty of Computer Science, University of New Brunswick. He has more than 21 years of academic and industry experience. Dr. Lashkari has been awarded 2 gold medals as well as 12 silver and bronze medals in international competitions around the world. In addition, he is the author of 10 books in English and Persian on topics including cryptography, network security, and mobile communication as well as over 80 journals and conference papers concerning various aspects of computer security. His current research focuses on cyber security, big security data analysis, Internet Traffic Analysis and the detection of malware and attacks.
Marzieh Jalal Abadi is a postdoctoral research fellow in Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity (CIC) at University of New Brunswick. Prior to joining CIC, she worked as researcher in at Data61|CSIRO and lecturer at University of New South Wales (UNSW) and Melbourne Institute of Technology in Sydney, Australia. She has a broad set of interests in machine learning, anomaly detection, Bayesian learning and analysis, iterative data fusion, and privacy in IoT. Her most recent research focuses on developing machine learning algorithms for human behaviour analysis and cybersecurity risk assessment for research and industrial organizations. Marzieh received her PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from UNSW in Sydney, Australia. During her PhD, she was research associate in Data61|CSIRO and worked on datamining and modeling various sensory data from smartphones and vibration energy harvesting sensors. The data sets were experimental and included but not limited to time series, imbalanced data and heterogeneous data. Prior to her PhD, she completed her Master’s degree in Mobile and Personal Communication at King’s College, University of London and B.Eng. degree in Electronic Engineering at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, Iran.
