SOCLAB Launch

Announcement

The launch of #SOCLAB will take place on Wednesday 11 April 2022.

Introduction

On 11 April 2018, The Cyber Academy, which runs within the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University, and Satisnet are teaming-up to launch a Security Operation Centre (SOC) training infrastructure – named SOCLAB - and which will allow companies to train their staff on scenarios such as ransomware, Denial of Service and data loss, all within a safe environment.

Over the past few years the School of Computing has developed the vSoC (Virtual Security Operations Centre) environment, which simulates real-life IT infrastructures, and where students can learn about advanced methods such as malware analysis, penetration testing, cryptography, and incident response, in a safe and isolated environment.

#SOCLAB

The School is now collaborating with a wide range of other companies to produce one of the most advanced Cyber Security infrastructures in the World. This includes leading companies involved in Cyber Security analytics such as CheckPoint, RSA, HPE, IBM and F5. A key part of the building of the vSoC has been a partnership with Satisnet, and who have built and run security operation centres. The work builds on a number of research projects, including within an EU funded project on cyber crime training.

The new partnership has created the physical training Security Operations Centre on the Merchiston Campus, and which will integrate advanced scenarios around Cyber Security, such as for ransomware, Denial of Service, and insider threats, and where teams will be able to train against attacks. With GDPR coming into effect in May 2018, companies will have to respond with 72 hours on an attack, and this type of environment will allow organisations to train their staff on coping with an incident.

Comments

The Dean of the School, Dr Sally Smith, outlines that,

“We have continued to invest in Cyber Security over the years, and have a thriving undergraduate and postgraduate provision. The investment to create a physical environment for security operations aims to immerse students and practitioners for real-life scenarios, which we hope will never happen, and then see how they cope with them.”

Prof Bill Buchanan OBE, who leads The Cyber Academy, says:

“Our dream has always to build training infrastructures which mimic the real-life IT environment, and where we can run scenarios. The collaboration with Satisnet Check Point highlights that we aim to use the most advanced systems and tools possible, and to train a wide spectrum of roles into how the can identify threats and then cope and respond to them”.

Satisnet’s  Director, John McCann commented:

Edinburgh Napier are at the forefront of Cyber Security training and innovation, my company have a mission to be the best at what we do in the Security Operations Centre and Cyber Training space, so this partnership is a perfect partnership.
