Arrival and Refreshments
12.00-13.15 Networking Lunch
13.15-13.20 Welcome and Opening Address
Paul Hutchinson, Hutchinson Networks
13.20-13.50 SDN for Intrusion Prevention Systems and DFET Training
Prof Bill Buchanan, Adrian Smales, Andres Santiago Robles Durazno, Edinburgh Napier University.
This presentation will present novel work in the creation of intrusion detection and prevention systems with a software defined network. It will showcase results which show the optimal architecture and some of the issues that can be encountered.
13.50-14.30 SDN - Cisco’s Approach. Salim Mehta, Technical Solutions Architect, Cisco Systems.
This presentation explains the history and evolution of SDN, the innovations introduced by Application Centric Infrastructure and how this is being used to build public and private cloud data centres which support bimodal IT and a devops methodology.
14.30-15.10 Health 4.0, Prof Christoph Thuemmler, FI-Star.
Demographic and societal changes but also the ongoing evolution of the Internet including the Internet of Things and new superfast networks such as 4G LTE and subsequently 5G has already started to change the way healthcare is going to be delivered. Already smart phones are used as gateways to connect wearables and home care devices. More and more sensors, embedded systems and advanced cyber-physical systems are being integrated vertically utilizing cloud technology. Horizontal integration over several domains is still in its infancy but is developing rapidly. However, especially the horizontal integration across different devices, domains and networks will require tools to support scalable software defined networks to reduce bandwidth requirements, latency and e-health carbon footprint and increase the amount of devices that can be connected to the network at any given point in time.
15.10-15.30 Refreshments
15.30-16.10 Realising the Immediate Benefits of SDN & NFV, Stephen Hampton, CTO, Hutchinson Networks
SDN and NFV are no longer technologies for tomorrow, they are available and mature now. Hutchinson Networks (HN) CTO Stephen Hampton, will use the experience of building the new HN public cloud platform Fabrix to discuss why organisations must consider SDN and NFV now. Organisations undergoing data centre refresh projects or upgrades to Layer 4 to 7 services that take advantage of SDN and NFV, can innovate, orchestrate, reduce cost and move ahead.
16.10-16.50 How to use SDN to Innovate, Expand and Deliver for your business, Tristan Liverpool, Systems Engineering Manager, UK Major Accounts, F5 Networks.
Learn how F5, through the power of SDN, are bringing the power of cloud, data centres, converged systems and as-a-Service together to enable fast, efficient and secure application delivery in today’s challenging hybrid environments. Tristan Liverpool will discuss how SDN can become the reality businesses want and need today. Through a programmable SDN that spans the entire network, not only layers 2 and 3, but also layers 4 to 7, businesses can meet their goals. Tristan will also discuss the challenges around security and how these can be mitigated.
16.50-17.30 SDN and governance, Glen Bisset, ISACA.
Risks to good governance from SDN IT change projects and IT change projects more generally.  Project ownership and senior management buy in and promotion.  In house skills versus those of vendors - risk of being blinded by science.  Funding decisions and the costs of changing in the future - how flexible will the proposed solution be and will relevant hardware work with other software.  Business drivers for change and estimating benefits & savings.  Accountability if something goes wrong - complexity of vendor, contractors and management contractual arrangements.  The importance of culture - concerns and criticisms should be encouraged early and on an ongoing basis.
17.30-18.30 Wine Reception

Presenters

Tristan Liverpool
Systems Engineering Manager, UK Major Accounts, F5 Networks
Tristan Liverpool has been at F5 for over 5 years and is currently the UK Major Accounts Systems Engineering Manager. He has over 20 years’ experience of working in the IT industry on technologies such Token Ring, X.21 all the way through to today’s advanced persistent threat security environments and the fast evolving SDN/SDAS world. He has been very involved in F5’s cloud, virtualisation and SDAS strategy over the last 4 years and as such is one of F5 UKISSA’s subject matter experts in this space.
Bio
Stephen Hampton
CTO, Hutchinson Networks
Stephen Hampton has been involved with Hutchinson Network since its beginnings in 2009 and took over as CTO in August 2014. With almost 20 years of experience in the IT Infrastructure space, Stephen has vast experience across the network, compute and storage technologies. However, for 10 years Stephen has been mainly focused on networking and achieved CCIE certification in 2008. Although Hutchinson Networks began life as a Network Integrator, Stephen has led the development of a new public cloud platform called Fabrix. Stephen has architected the Fabrix platform to take advantage of the latest SDN and NFV technologies.
